Cindy's Visit -- Day Four

North to Alaska, The Rush is On!!!
We traveled to a Gold Mine on day four and panned for gold. We started our ride to the mine on a small train with Earl Hughes (a local country music singer) entertaining us. We helped him sing a Johnny Horton song entitled, North to Alaska. After panning for gold we had it weighed. Cindy's is worth over $14.00 and mine was worth a little over $11.00. Russ had the largest amount worth a little over $19.00. Oh well....I don't think you could say that any of us struck it rich!!!

We also visited the Alaska Pipeline and learned how a "pig" is used to clean the line. Our next stop was the riverboat discovery. Before loading the boat, Cindy was able to talk with Lance Mackey, a four time Iditarod winner. He has also won the Yukon Quest at least three times. He won both of them back-to-back two years in a row! See the great picture of Cindy, Lance, and his lead dog. The Riverboat Discovery took us to an native village where we learned about the Athabaskan Native Culture.

  1. Awesome pictures! It looks like you had a wonderful time. What lens did you use for the close up of the wildlife?

Our Trip to Anchorage and Valdez - August 2010

On Friday, August 13, we headed to Anchorage (a side trip for the Valdez fishing trip). Of course "shopping" had to be added since "fishing" was planned for the 16th. We had a wonderful trip down the Parks Highway to Anchorage. We even got to see a glimpse of Mt. McKinley on the way. The shopping was great! We both got some new MBT tennis shoes. They took some getting used to...but, we love them. And best of all, my plantar fasciitis has been cured!!!

Valdez Fishing for Silver Salmon

Our very special friends, Pat and Peggy, took us out in their boat (along with their deckhand, Alexis) fishing for silver salmon. We had a great day fishing. Russ caught the first silver (the smallest one of the day). Nancy's first catch was the biggest fish in the box for about an hour. The more we fished the bigger they got...does that sound like a "traditional fish tale?" Well...believe it or not...it is true! Just look at the pile of fish heads behind Nancy as she cleans the last one of the thirteen caught that day. She is becoming a real "outdoors woman!" Holding and cleaning fish is a real accomplishment!

THANK YOU, PAT AND PEGGY, for taking us on our first Silver Salmon fishing excursion! We had a GREAT time!
